Houston crime: HPD searches for Cardarius Jamar Woodard, accused of murdering maintenance worker David Walters at Montrose apartment

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Police are searching for a man accused of the death of a maintenance worker in a Montrose-area apartment.

Cardarius Jamar Woodard, 22, is charged with murder. Houston police released a photo of Woodard in the hope that someone would know where he is.

Police said Woodard is known for his ties to both Texas and Louisiana. It is considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting took place on Thursday, August 11, at approximately 11:55 p.m. in an apartment located on 1400th Street of Marshall Street near Mulberry.

The video above is from a previous report.

According to the police, a man and woman were welding outside in a garage area but went upstairs to the apartment to cool off.

While they were inside the apartment, another man walked in and asked for keys from the woman who said she didn’t have them.

That was when the gunman, later identified as Woodard, pulled out a firearm and fired a warning shot, police said. When he confronted the first armed man with gunfire inside the apartment, Woodard reportedly shot him in the chest.

Police said Woodard fled the scene.

HPD said the 60-year-old man who was hit by a bullet died in hospital. Family members recognized him as David Walters.

Officials said Walters was a maintenance worker at the apartments. Investigators were working to find out if the gunman lived there as well.

“According to the witness, he lives here. But someone else says he doesn’t,” said Lieutenant Izagiri. “We don’t know for sure at this point. A witness can identify him.”

Anyone with information on Woodard’s whereabouts or in this case is urged to call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
